Introduction:

To describe something is to reduce it, to grind it down, to project its cosmic totality from the holy world of truth onto mute and inadequate paper. Such is the task of the author. I have endeavored, yea, perhaps at times without the barest hope of success, to in this volume render for the interested reader what facts may indeed be wrested from the iron jaws of history. Some may say that the historian is an Icarus, a rude Prometheus, trying to raise back what has once been buried in the cold ground. Yet without knowledge of our past, what are we?
